Doing HDFS Research at Tech Library
Finding HDFS-related books
- Books at TTU Libraries
Use the IRIS Catalog to find and locate books in our collection. You can do simple searches for author, title, subject, or keyword or browse through the alphabetical indices. In addition, you can filter your searches to materials of specific formats, at specific locations, etc.
- Books at Other Libraries
The best way to find what HDFS titles are available from other libraries is to use the WorldCat database. If the items you need are not in our collection, you can request them through Illiad.
Finding Articles
There are many different electronic databases useful for Human Development and Family Studies. The principle one is PsycINFO (available through EBSCO).

- Sociological Abstracts (formerly SocAbs) sample search: "family relations"

Paper Indexes
In addition to electronic databases, paper indexes are a good source of Human Development and Family Studies articles. Many of these can be found in the Reference Room, or in the stacks. Here is a sampling of indexes that may contain material relevant to HDFS, and their call numbers:
- Abstracts in Anthropology (GN 1 .A15)

Finding Dissertations
Dissertation Abstracts indexes doctoral disssertations written in the U.S. from 1861 to the present. It also contains masters theses and some dissertations from Canadian and overseas institutions.
Finding Government Documents
One of the best ways to find government documents is to search the GPO database. It includes records published by the Federal Government Printing Office. The catalog includes references to congressional committee reports and hearings, debates, documents from executive departments, and other materials. The paper counterpart of GPO is the Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications (GP 3.8), which is kept in the Government Documents Library.
GPO offers access to over 1,000 periodicals that the government publishes. Many of these publications, such as Aging, American Education, Children Today, Monthly Labor Review, Schizophrenia Bulletin, and Social Security Bulletin may be relevant to the social sciences. To locate this material, consult the United States Government Periodicals Index (Z 1223.Z7 U8), which is located in Government Documents.
