Locating Newspapers in Current Periodicals

Newspaper issues for the current and previous months are found along the south wall of the basement (to the right as you exit the elevators) in hanging files. They are filed alphabetically and are divided into local, domestic, and international sections. The current month of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal is kept at the Government Documents Reference Desk; the previous month is against the south wall. All current paper editions of the University Daily and the Wall Street Journal are kept at the Government Documents Reference Desk. Here is a quick look at what the Libraries' currently have:

Not all newspapers are archived, but those that are can be found in the center shelving along the east wall of the basement in the microfilm collection. They are filed in alphabetical order reading from right to left. The name of the newspapers are posted on the end of the shelving. For archived titles, we retain the paper copy until the film arrives.

  • Newspapers do not circulate.
  • Microfilm reels of noncurrent newspaper titles are assigned Library of Congress call numbers.
  • Paper indexes to newspapers can be found along the wall adjacent to the A call number range for unbound journals. These paper indexes cover more years than the online indexes. The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and The Times of London are just some of the paper indexes available. When using these indexes, please copy down the entire citation to the article.
