Current Periodicals

Current periodicals are located in the east basement of the University Library, a location also shared by Government Documents/Maps and the microform collection. Current periodicals houses individual issues of newspapers and journals received within the last two years. Most older editions are bound after two years and sent up to the stacks (some are retained in microform format and therefore are kept nearby in the basement).
Exceptions to this are the major collections of: architecture journals, which are housed at the Architecture Library; law journals, which are housed at the Law Library; and medical journals, which are housed at the Health Sciences Center Library.

Please keep in mind that the terms periodical, serial, journal and magazine are frequently used interchangeably in libraries. They all mean the same thing: something published at regular intervals.

The Library subscribes to a number of newspapers from U.S. and foreign cities. Among the U.S. papers received are the Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Washington Post. Foreign titles include The Times of London and Excelsior (Mexico City). Issues for the current two months are available in paper. Back issues for some newspapers are available on microfilm. Issues of The Times of London date back to 1785 and those of the New York Times to 1851.
