Microform Collections

The Library has a number of single items and large collections in microfilm, microfiche, or microcard formats. Most of these appear in IRIS and have a call number assigned. In some cases, the call number may be an X. This means that the title has no call number and is filed alphabetically by author/title or name of collection. If you need assistance in locating any item that is in a microformat, do not hesitate to ask for help at the Documents/Periodicals desk.

Materials on microfilm and microfiche are found in the moveable shelving against the east wall of the basement, the order of which needs to be explained: The materials start from the right side (if you are facing the shelving; see diagram below) and move to the left, from shelf #23 to shelf #9 (shelves 1 through 9 are Government Documents microfiche: they are filed from left to right and are in SuDoc number order). Library of Congress call numbers preceed the local system call numbers. The microfilm newspaper collection (filed alphabetically in shelves 13 through 16) is the division point between the film and the fiche. Following this collection is the microfiche, beginning with items having call numbers. Following these are individual items and collections in alphabetical order, then three large sets: college catalogs, Disclosure corporate reports and the ERIC documents.

Shelf layout for microfilm and microfiche along the east wall of basement

There are four large boxed collections of microcards kept on the far end of the shelving along the wall next to the A range of unbound journals. These are: Early American Periodicals Index (AI 3 I52), Journals of the House of Commons (J 301 K31), Three Centuries of English and American Drama (PN 6111 T47 1966), and Early Americam Imprints (Z 1215 E93). Other large microformat research collections include ERIC documents, Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature, Western Americana, and English literary periodicals. Helpful guides are online for the following topics (if you are looking for other topics not shown here, try the subject area webpages created by other TTU Librarians. Many of them have compiled microform lists for their subject areas):

Indexes and guides to microform collections can be found against the wall adjacent to the A call number range for unbound journals. These should appear in IRIS and normally have the same call number as the collection they index. Not all of the guides provide subject access to collections; some are merely listings of included titles.

There are many microform readers in the basement, 4 of which are able to make copies (10 cents each), and 2 of which scan images digitally (no cost). Items in microcard format can be read but not copied. Again, if you need assistance, do not hesitate to ask at the Government Documents reference desk.
