Texas Links

  • Texas State and Local Government on the Net Links to the official websites of state, county, city and other governmental units in Texas. This site also has the other 49 states as well.
  • Texas State Library and Archives Commission's "About Texas" website A variety of information about Texas can be obtained here. From business information, geography, laws and regulations, history, state agency publications, etc.
  • Business and Industry Data Center This is an ongoing initiative of the U.S. Census Bureau designed to make data and statistics available at the state and local levels. Here you can find maps of Census 2000 Texas data.
  • Texas Water Resource Institute This institute, located at Texas A&M (College Station), serves as the focal point of water-related research at Texas universities. From this website you can obtain their various newsletters on water research and resources, current projects, research reports going back to 1964, find contact information for university personnel in this field statewide, and links to other related sites.
  • Texas Water Information Network“ The mission of the Texas Water Information Network is to facilitate access to basic and value-added water resource and related data.” It is a cooperative between many Texas agencies including the Texas Water Development Board, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (formerly the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission), Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Water Monitoring Council, and the Drought Preparedness Council. This website has links to many water resources sites specific to Texas-groundwater conservation districts and associations, river authorities, the EPA, drought preparedness.
  • Texas State Data Center Viewable and/or downloadable Census data for Texas in a variety of forms: graphs, maps, reports, etc.
  • Texas Historic Sites Atlas Searchable index of historic places--by county, site/marker name or address. Requires plug-in (easily obtainable at site). Note: Their map locations are a bit off.
  • Handbook of Texas Online A very good reference source about the State of Texas. This online encyclopedia contains over 23,000 articles covering people, places, events, etc.
  • North Central Texas Digital Atlas An interactive atlas of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
  • City of Dallas. Online maps of Dallas.
  • Early Maps of Texas and the Southwest, and a lot more about Texas. A website presented by the Texas Council for the Humanities Resource Center. Click on "Texas history, Texas Culture" once the website loads.
  • Online version of the Murphy and Bolanz manuscript collection at the Dallas Public Library. Early maps of Dallas and surrounding communites dating from 1880 to 1920. Requires a plug in.
  • Texas Appraisal Districts from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
  • a<>Paso del Norte Maps for Public Access. Tri-state, international GIS cooperative in El Paso.
  • Borderland Information Center. "The Borderland Information Center (BIC) is a central clearinghouse and referral center for information about the Texas/Mexico border region. The BIC is a section of the Texas Water Development Boards' Texas Natural Resources Information System Division and has access to all of its geospatial data and mapping products."

Texas Map, GIS and Data Links (these websites also serve as an endless portal to such information)

  • Map Collection, Texas State Library. This website "contains original, photoreproduced, and compiled maps covering the period from the early 17th century through the late 20th centuries." Search by place or keyword, subject, title, map type, cartographer, publisher, year, etc.
  • The Texas section of the Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection, University of Texas at Austin. Large selection of online maps for Texas.
  • Texas Map Society Begun in 1996, this organization aims "to foster the study, understanding and collecting of historical maps and the history of cartography". This organization is the only one of its kind in Texas.
  • Texas Geographic Information Council "The Texas Geographic Information Council (TGIC) is a geographic data coordination and planning group serving the state of Texas. TGIC addresses issues concerning geographic data development, data exchange, geographic information system implementation, standards, statewide planning, and policies".
  • Texas Geography Network "The Texas Geography Network (TxGN) is a tool to help you locate and use geographic information about Texas. The Texas Geography Network uses the Internet to provide access to a wide range of geographic content - including ready-made maps, geospatial datasets, and online maps (MapServices)."
  • The GeoCommunity's Texas GIS DownloadsLots of data available to download here (at costs ranging from cheap to expensive) from county to statewide level. Not just Texas, either, but the whole world.
  • Texas General Land Office (GLO) The oldest state agency in Texas, the GLO provides over 100 GIS layers to the public. It's left-hand side navigation bar leads you to many Texas data sets--Coastal Issues, Natural Resources, etc.
  • USGS Activities in Texas Online data (real-time water date, weather data); Scientific Activities (Agriculture to Water Quality); General Information (Contacts, Educator Reources), new publications and publication search engine.
  • USGS National Mapping Division in Texas A guide to coorperative mapping programs in Texas administered by the USGS.
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (New name of the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC)) GIS Page This commission is the lead governmental agency for the State of Texas. Their local offices are located at 4630 50th St, Suite 600.
  • Texas Natural Resource Information System (TNRIS) This is Texas' clearinghouse for natural resource data, either from this site or links to an outside vendor.
  • Railroad Commission of Texas Electronic and digital map data pertaining to the "...oil and gas industry, gas utilities, pipeline and rail safety, safety in the liquefied petroleum gas industry, and the surface mining of coal and uranium" in Texas.
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife GIS Lab A small amount of downloads and maps are available (more are promised).
  • Texas Water Development Board Responsible for statewide water planning. The data available here is a combination their own as well as what can be found on the TNRIS site.
  • Texas StratMap The Texas Strategic Mapping Program, known as StratMap, is a multi-year, cost-sharing program that has built mission-critical GIS base data statewide. The federal government and the State of Texas are contributing up to 75% of the development costs of the data, making StratMap a great opportunity for Texans to develop low cost, accurate, and up-to-date GIS base data for their part of the state.
  • TexasView. Landsat images of Texas and surrounding states (including Mexico); data portal for Texas (links to several of the above sites).
  • Texas Department of Health. You can request data on vital statistics and health.
