Quick Map Links on the Internet
-
If you are looking for "just a quick map" of something for a report, or have a similar reference question, check out these general sites--most of which do not require a plug-in. More online maps and the like can be found off the Online Reference Links page.
- Oddens Bookmarks A fully searchable site from Utrecht University in the Netherlands that contains much more than just maps. Included are map dealers, carto and geoservers, map collections and libraries, government cartography and the like (over 22,500 links). Two downsides are that this website will lead you to the occasional website where you must pay for images, and the ubiquitous link rot.
- The About.com Geography Page This website contains a lot of information in the way of maps and geography. Look out for the annoying pop-ups.
- The United Nations Cartographic Section Website Color and black/white maps of most countries, regions, and areas of U.N. involvement in.pdf format.
- National Geographic Map Machine From the initial webpage, click on "Printer Friendly Maps" for a clickable (zoomable) map of the world which produces black and white maps.
- The Global Gazetteer Based upon the NIMA GEOnet Names Server, this database contains nearly 3 million cities and towns as well at their latitude and longitude. The U.S. is not listed, however.
- Topozone.com "Seamless" USGS topographic maps (as well as accompanying gazetteer) of the 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands; one of several sites of this nature.
- Maptech MapServer Similar to Topozone.com, but with the added feature of nautical and aeronautical chart coverage.
- EarthExplorer Map Finder from the USGS. A quick way to find out what 7.5 minute map covers the place you want, and to order it.
-
