Locating and Citing Maps

How do I locate Map Collection material?

  • Collection material may be found by using the online catalog. Material dealing with Texas has also been listed in the Map Collection website (Texas Resources in the Map Collection). Specific items shelved in the Map Collection are represented in the catalog by records with the location symbol "MAPS". The best way to search in the catalog for a map (once you have your keyword or title or subject chosen) is to limit the format to "maps" and the location to "Government Documents". See images below:

  • Other material may be located using indexes available at the Government Documents/Maps Reference Desk, at the atlas shelving, by browsing through the drawers, or by staff assistance. The U.S. Geological Survey maps are indexed, but many are not yet cataloged--this is an ongoing process. Index maps must be used to determine which U.S.G.S. maps the Library owns. Texas and New Mexico 7.5 minute, 15 minute and 30 minute topographic maps have been inventoried and are in list form. They can be located off the Texas Resources page.
  • Additionally, selected online map material can be found via the Map Collection homepage. TTU is not responsible for the content of external sources.

How is the Map Collection arranged?

  • The Map Collection is arranged primarily by the Library of Congress (LC) classification system and to a lesser extent by the Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) classification system. U.S.G.S. maps and other series are filed alphabetically by state or by sheet number. For assistance in locating material ask at the Government Documents/Map Reference Desk.
