Frequently Asked Questions
May I check out map material?
Why, of course you can. Many maps circulate for a period of three weeks and are checked out at the Government Documents/Maps Reference Desk. Maps are placed in tubes for ease of handling and preservation. Maps should remain in circulation tubes when not in use and need to be returned to the Government Documents/Maps Reference Desk. The fine for maps is 25 cents per item per day. If a map is damaged or lost, report it immediately to the staff in the Map Collection. Atlases, rare older map editions, 15 minute scale maps, maps printed before 1950, and reference materials do not circulate.
Can I take these maps hiking to Palo Duro State Park or Guadalupe Mountains National Park?
No. Not to these parks or any others. Maps are not for field use or to be taken out of town. They are for use only in labs, classrooms or at home. Maps should not be folded, pinned to walls or written upon.
How can I order my own map?
Information on ordering personal copies of U.S.G.S. and other maps is available off of the Online Reference Links page. Local dealers for U.S.G.S products are listed on the Texas Resources page. The TTU Library does not order maps for patrons, but we can certainly assist you with questions that you may have.
How do I make a copy of a map?
Photocopiers, as well as a change machine, are available in the basement.
What About Copyright Information?
U.S. copyright law, Section 107 states that:
"...the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include —
-
the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
-
the nature of the copyrighted work;
-
the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
-
the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
"The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors."
United States Federal Government materials (such as materials from the USGS, CIA, NIMA, and NOAA, among others) do not require copyright fees or permissions as these are in the public domain. Please check with the staff if you are unsure about copyright requirements for materials in the Map Collection.
