Map Collection

Are you trying to locate important sites or data for a geography, history, geoscience or architecture course? Do you need a map to insert into a report? Do you simply need to know where in the world something is located and have a reference question? Would you like to work with GIS? The answers may be found in the Government Documents' Map Collection.

What is the Map Collection?

The Map Collection is a component of Government Documents in the TTU Library and the Federal Regional Depository Program. As part of this program, the Collection houses maps from the United States Geological Survey, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (formerly NIMA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Central Intelligence Agency, and other federal agencies. The focus of the Map Collection is Lubbock and the South Plains, and to support the curriculum of Texas Tech. At last count (February 2004) there were 69,572 maps and 1,667 atlases in the collection.

What is in the Map Collection?

  • The TTU Map Collection includes atlases, gazetteers, cataloged maps, globes, geographic reference works, as well as some travel information. The Collection provides cartographic materials on the world, individual continents, countries, regions, states, counties and cities. In addition, subject maps cover such areas such as topography, geology, history, and vegetation. Government agencies produce topographic, geologic, hydrographic maps and aeronautical charts. There is also material from other international mapping agencies and the State of Texas, along with materials from commercial map publishers, such as Michelin, Rand McNally and DeLorme.
  • The Collection also includes a set of small photo-reproducible maps suitable for various class assignments. Additionally, as a service to Tech students, faculty, and the general public, there is a file of maps and supporting brochures for most state and county parks in Texas, as well as varying amounts of tourist information on other states. Across from the Government Documents Reference Desk is a small, 3-terminal GIS Lab available for patron use.
  • Rare and older maps of Texas and beyond are housed in the Southwest Collection. The Vietman Archive has a large collection of maps of Vietnam, Indochina and Southeast Asia.
