Scholarly articles are written to report findings or research in a particular field.  The authors of these articles are usually professional experts in that field and they are writing to other scholars.  These articles are often called "peer reviewed" or "refereed" because, before each article is published, it is reviewed by one or more scholars who are also experts in the field.

How do you find articles that are scholarly?
Follow one of the methods below.

Method 1:

The easiest way to find scholary articles on your topic is to search the Academic Search Premierdatabase.  Just click on the "Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journal" box located on that database's search screen.  All the articles you find will be scholarly.

Method 2:

If you do not find what you need in "Academic Search Premier," do the following:

1.  Search one of the online databases or print indexes and find several article citations.

2.  Go to the Reference Desk in the University Library and ask for Ulrichs.

3.  Look up your journal title in the index and find its number.  The journal title is usually listed as "source" in your list of citations.

4.  Look up that number in the journals list.  When you find the entry for that journal, check the "document type."  If it says "scholarly," you have a scholarly article.
