How to find Newspaper Articles @ The Libraries
Do you have any information about the newspaper article (newspaper title, article title, volume/issue, publication date, page numbers)?
If yes, then:
-
you can check the IRIS, the Online Public Access Catalog, to see if this is a newspaper title and issue the library owns;
-
or you can attempt to obtain the newspaper article in a full-text electronic database (NOTE: not all electronic databases provide access to full-text newspaper articles). Click here to see a listing of electronic databases that provide access to newspaper articles.
If no, then follow this search process:
Step I
- Select a newspaper index such as Newspaper Abstracts (First Search) or Academic Universe (Lexis-Nexis). For a full list of newspaper databases, visit the "Find Articles-- News and Current Events" page.
- Formulate keywords based on your research topic and use those keywords to perform a search.
- Review your result list and click on relevant citations.
- Do you see an SFX button? If no, jump to Step II. If yes, click on the SFX button.
- If an online full text is available, SFX will provide a link to the full text. If full text is not available, SFX will tell you that it is not available. Print your citation(s) and go to Step II.
Step II
At this point, you:
- Have information about the article you need
- Know that the article you need is not available online
-
You need to check IRIS, the online catalog, to see if this is a newspaper title and issue the Library owns in paper or microform.
Once in IRIS, click on the "Journals/Periodicals" link at the top right-hand side of the screen.
Type in your newspaper title (not the title of the newspaper article).
Select "Title begins with" as your browse index. Click "go."
Click on the entry that exactly matches your newspaper title. It will usually be the second title in the list.
The brief record for the item you want will be displayed. Look at the "Location/Call No. " information and click on the hyperlinked call number. Call number and location information for the newspaper will be displayed. Ask at the Reference Desk if you need help reading and interpreting the information on this screen.
-
Locate the newspaper article in the library.
-
Make a photocopy (Newspapers cannot be checked out). If you would like a photocopy to be made for you, use the Document Delivery Service.
If you do not find a match for your newspaper title, it probably means that TTU does not subscribe to that newspaper. You may request a copy of the article from Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan.
