New System for Printing in the Libraries
Beginning January 10, students, faculty and staff will notice a new system for printing in the University Libraries. Through a partnership with the University’s ID Office, the Libraries now offer a new service called PRINTexpress, which makes it possible for patrons to pay for their print jobs using their TechExpress account.
PRINTexpress is expected to not only cut down on wasteful printing, but to also increase the quality and speed of printing with the addition of several new printers. The costs for printing will be $.05 per page for black and white, and $1.00 per page for color printing. Previously, color printing was not available at the libraries.
This new system is in response to rising costs associated with printing in the libraries. Prior to the implementation of the PRINTexpress system, costs associated with printing in the libraries had risen to an average of approximately $9,000 per month. Library administrators had also noticed an increase in the amount of unclaimed print jobs throughout the libraries. This was a definite waste of student use fees. The new system will help insure that students pay for only the print jobs they send.
The libraries will not be making a profit from this new system. In fact, the likely outcome is that printing will still have to be subsidized by the libraries. However, as an added service to patrons, all TechExpress accounts will receive a $2.50 printing credit three times per year, (at the beginning of the spring semester, the fall semester and once in the summer). This credit is the equivalent of 50 complimentary black and white pages per semester. Patrons who do not currently have an active TechExpress account will need to contact the University ID office to set-up an account prior to printing from any of the libraries computers.
