Alternatives to Printing
Not all information needs to be printed. Students and other researchers who would like to save information can take advantage of alternatives to printing in the Libraries. These alternatives can save patrons valuable time and money. Library personnel will be happy to assist you with choosing the option that’s best for you.
- Print only a portion of the information.
For example, one might opt to print only key summaries of research, or appropriate bibliographies while maintaining the bulk of the research data in digital format for ready access.
- Save it to the network.
The Campus IT Division provides each student with 100 MB of network storage capacity that can be used for bulk data storage. This storage capacity can be accessed from any networked PC on campus, and from almost anywhere in the world where the student might have access to the Internet and could setup VPN connectivity to TTU. Texas Tech’s IT Help Central (742-4357) can provide additional details on this process if needed.
- Save it on a flash drive.
All of the Library and ATLC PCs accommodate small USB thumb drives that students can purchase at many local technology stores for $15-100 depending on needed capacity (128-1000 MB). These can be taken anywhere and plugged into any PC with a USB port for data access and retrieval.
- E-mail it to yourself.
Students can email bulk data to themselves and fellow students on teams for access from any PC with Internet access.
- Burn it to a CD.
Students can also burn bulk data to a CD on any of the Library PCs. Writable CDs cost about $1.00 each at local stores and can hold upwards of 700 MB of data.
If you need assistance in utilizing these alternatives to printing, please visit one of the service desks in the Libraries.
