About the Texas Tech University Digital Collections

During an era that has produced Wikipedia and Amazon, which many find more convenient than Britannica and the local bookstore, organizations throughout the world are struggling to bring their services into the online digital environment. The Texas Tech University Libraries are no different. Toward this end, in February of 2006, it chartered a Digital Library Initiatives Team (DLIT) that has begun structuring a foundation to support a wide array of digital library services. Through these services, the Libraries will strive to make quality information usable and widely available in digital format for its patrons.

The Digital Collections is one such service, although it is still in its early stages. Each collection will contain materials that contribute in some valuable way to ongoing research and education at Texas Tech University. Like any other library or museum collection, each digital collection will have some unifying element and be of lasting interest to researchers and educators; unlike other library or museum collections, most digital collections will be available from the comfort of one's own home.

The DLIT invites you, the Texas Tech community, to consider the unique materials that you've acquired throughout your career. Would they find an audience beyond your office, your department, or your circle of colleagues? If so, please consider adding them to the Digital Collections. You can begin the process by first learning how to plan a digital library project.

As always, the DLIT is here to help you. If you have any concerns or questions about the Digital Collections, or if you would like help planning a project, please feel free to contact us.
