Finding Architectural Floor Plans, Elevations, and Sections
Although architectural floor plans and elevations can be found in many volumes, the following titles are important sources to begin your research:
- Sir Bannister Fletcher’s History of Architecture.
NA200 .F63 1996 (and earlier editions)
Sir Bannister Fletcher includes many floor plans, elevations, and sections of the most important architectural buildings designed from ancient times through the 20th Century. The Architecture Library has several copies in Reference, Reserve, and in stacks, while the University Library has a copy in Reference.
- The Pelican History of Art Series
(Assorted call numbers, located on an index table in Architecture Reference)
Separate volumes cover art and/or architecture for particular time periods and geographic areas. The surveys include photographs, drawings, and elevations of major architecture of the respective periods and countries. Included are these titles:- Art and Architecture of Ancient America

- Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals
Avery Index offers access to articles on a particular architect, architecture firm, and buildings. When searching for a building, such as Fallingwater, the records retrieved will include a phsical description field indicating whether the article includes photographs, floor plans, or elevations. You may include a type of illustration as a search criteria on the Advanced Search screen.
- Online Catalog (IRIS)All materials owned by the University Libraries, including the [main] University Library, Architecture Library, Southwest Collections/Special Collections, and the Law Library can be located by searching IRIS, the online catalog. Books on individual architects or architectural firms include floor plans and elevations of their works. Complete a subject search in the online catalog. Type in the architects last name, first name (Ando, Tadao). For architectural firms, type in Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill.
