Major Reference Sources

  • IRIS (Online Catalog):  IRIS is the online catalog for Texas Tech University Libraries, including the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, Architecture Library, and the International Cultural Center Library.  The materials held in the Texas Tech Law Library are also included in IRIS.  A catalog record can be found for all materials including books, journals, music scores, government documents, online databases, videos, DVDs, maps, and electronic products.  IRIS is the first source to check if you want to know what is in the Library collection.

 

  • Architecture Graphic Standards Online (Also bound volume available on Architecture Reserve: Ramsey, Charles George. Ramsey/Sleeper architectural graphic standards. 10th ed. New York: John Wiley & Sons, c2000. Reserve TH2031 .R35 2000.)  Architectural Graphic Standards is an illustrated source for locating the standards for the design and construction of buildings.  It is used by architects, builders, engineers, and interior designers. Standards are documented for accessibility, general planning and design data, materials, building types and space planning, engineering systems, historic preservation, etc. .The database is loaded on all but the scanner workstations in the Architecture Lilbrary.

 

  • McGowan, Maryrose. Interior graphic standards.  New York: John Wiley & Sons,  c2003.  Reserve TH2031 .M34 2003 & Reference. This reference source offers documentation and instruction on the current standards and practices for designing commercial interiors. It serves as a comprehensive source of data design and project management information for architects, interior designers, facility managers, contractors, and students. Information on the planning of an interior project from the designing to completion can be found in this reference source.

 

  • Ching, Frank.  Building codes illustrated: a guide to understanding the 2000 international building code.  Hoboken, N.J: John Wiley, c2003. Reference & Reserve TH420 .C49 2003.  Building Codes Illustrated is an analysis of and illustrated guide to the 2000 International Building Code (IBC). It serves as an introduction to building codes that are required for the professional study of architecture and engineering. This reference source is intended to be used in conjunction with the IBC and should be used as an expansion and illustrated interpretation of the code.

 

  • Ching, Frank. Building construction illustrated.  3rd ed.  New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., c2001.  Reference & Reserve TH146 .C52 2001.  Building Construction Illustrated is a comprehensive introduction to the principles of building construction.

 

  • Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals (Online).  Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals is an online database that documents all materials held at the Avery Library at Columbia University. Avery covers subjects related to architecture, including archaeology, design, city planning, interior design, and historic preservation. It indexes over 2000 international scholarly and popular journals.  Coverage is primarily from the 1930s to the present, but there is selective coverage dating back to the 1860s.  The brief record for each article indicates the illustrations within that article, including floor plans, drawings, etc.

  • GIS (Geographic Information Systems):  GIS is important for architects in locating data for construction sites and urban planning. The GIS software makes it possible for users to take data from various sources and present it visually in the form of words, charts, graphs, tables, photography, and maps. GIS data comes from digital and scanned maps, the U.S. Census, Global Positioning System, remote sensing, and aerial photography.  

 

  • Sweet’s Catalog. New York: Sweet's,  Reference TH455 .S787   The Sweet’s Catalog is a directory for locating information on over 10,700 manufacturers offering over 61,300 products. This paper directory has two sections for the alphabetical listing of manufacturers and product types.  A limited version of the Sweets’ Catalog can be located at http://sweets.construction.com/, however, that database is incomplete.

 

  • Architectural Graphics (1946):   Martin, C. Leslie.  Architectural Graphics. New York: Macmillan Company, 1952.  Reserve NA2700 .M37.  Architectural Graphics is an illustrated source on architectural drawing for axiomatic and isometric drawing, as well as the various types of perspective drawing. The volume also discusses and illustrates the principles of shades and shadows.
