In addition to the circulating collection of books on the Library’s 8th floor, the Architecture Library features a number of special collections that are made up of materials in different formats, serving various needs, and with different circulation policies. This page tells you something about these collections.

Journals

The library subscribes to over 50 journals, magazines, and newsletters. The unbound issues are located on the 9th floor of the library to the right of the stairs. Bound volume call numbers begin behind the unbound issues and then continue on the other side of the room following the reference books. Most journals have call numbers, however, there are some duplicate volumes that do not have call numbers printed on the volume spines and a few runs of journals, shelved along the wall, that are not in the catalog and do not have call numbers. Also along the wall are older duplicate unbound journal issues that circulate for 3 days. The rest of the journal collection does not circulate.

Reference

Because reference books are meant for frequent consultation, books in the reference collection on the 9th floor do not circulate. In this collection you will find encyclopedias, dictionaries, and almanacs related to architecture. You will also find books on the history of architecture in various countries, cultures, and time periods. Books on architectural standards, building materials, and codes are kept in Reference. The archives of some well-known architects’ drawings and plans are found in Reference as well.

Reserve

Materials on reserve are kept at the help desk. Some of them are on reserve for particular classes at faculty request; others are kept at the desk because they are in high demand and need to be readily accessible. The online catalog has a subset catalog for Course Reserves in which you can search for materials reserved for classes by course and instructor. Loans for reserve items are 2-hr. use in the library; overnight; and 3-day.

Visual Resource Collection (VRC)

The visual resources collection, which reflects both western and non-western architectural traditions, supports the teaching and research of the College of Architecture. The VRC is currently in the process of developing a collection of digital architectural images that will be accessible online 24/7.

Tthe Archivision Digital Archive, a collection of 16,000 digital images in architecture from prehistoric to modern times is now available in the Libraries Digital Collections.  The VRC received a grant from the Helen Jones Foundation to license this collection.

Videos

The library has a small video collection with just over 100 titles. Videos are kept at the help desk and are available for 3-day loan. Videos are represented in the online catalog, but you may wish to browse the lists here.
